How does their bottom line look from here?

Cypress Health Region - Shaunavon Hospital and Care Centre

Harassing the sick and wounded makes their bottom line look great. They have done nothing more to advance health and safety, their idea of stopping the workers compensation claims and sick time is to deny it. This just looks good on paper!  We are paying out money just about everyday in OT.  Morale could not be lower.

  1. Under our old contract, the employer already had the right to request medical verification of any employee requesting sick leave. 24.06 of old contract. They had the means to watch dog what they deem abuses of sick time. The fact of the matter is that they dropped the ball, and did not follow up on their own program.
Now, it is far easier for them to attempt to vilify and dehumanize all the workers, by implying we are ALL abusing our bargained for sick time. They feel justified in bullying and abusing every single sick and injured worker. We are not, after all, human beings, deserving to be treated with dignity. We are lower than the low; problematic numbers on a graph.
I, for one, have never collected one days sick pay. It was always a comfort to know that if I did become ill, I would have access to sick time, and ease the worry of paying the bills during illness. The very reasons that most union members agree to lesser salaries during contract negotiations in return for security during illness.
The Labor Board says it is against the law for an employer to withhold sick pay. Like many dictators, this Region feels it is above the law. Sooner or later, we are all going to wise up and start calling the Labor Board each time the employer bullies us.

  2. I see yet another example of a healthcare worker being pressured by her employer above...
I hear this comment from time to time as workers try to convey that they are not" Abusing sick time" since they have never used a sick day, point proven the health region has won again!!!!!!! Can any employee say they have never taken a sick day , sure!! Can that same employee say they have NEVER worked sick or injured? Not a chance it is very very unlikely...then the snowball effect comes in...come to work sick to avoid others questioning the legitimateness of your illness and in turn make others sick in your workplace. and so on , and so on, again victory for WHO???

  3. To the response to my comment...point taken. I have indeed worked when not well. I have not worried about others questioning the validity of my illness. I have been concerned about my co-workers once again working short. Which should not be my concern. The fact that we are short staffed is the Region's responsibility, not mine.
So you are very right, I have been part of the snowball effect, as well intentioned as I think I may have been. Makes me think about things a whole lot differently. Thanks for the feedback!
